Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon

One of the Foundation’s signature events is its Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon which now awards $6,000 scholarships to deserving inner-city high school seniors from Crenshaw, George Washington Preparatory and Susan Miller Dorsey high schools.  The Foundation has had the honor of featuring prominent keynote speakers such as basketball legend & six-time NBA MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Los Angeles city Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John E. Deasy.

The GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation’s (GLAAACC Foundation) 18th Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon was held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Los Angeles Hotel Downtown.  The GLAAACC Foundation awarded twelve high school graduates of Class of 2016 from Crenshaw, Jordan, George Washington Preparatory and Susan Miller Dorsey high schools with scholarship funds totaling $36,000 to assist with their college tuition.  The scholarship awards luncheon featured a testimonial from a past recipients, theater performances by the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center and a presentation on the Foundation’s history and programs.  We were very excited and pleased with the youth performance by the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center who shared with our scholars, sponsors and guests an excerpt from The Lion King 2017 the Musical.

On behalf of the GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation Board of Directors, we would like to thank all who attended and supported the 18th Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon.  We would also like to extend a warm thank you to Southern California Gas Company, Wells Fargo, Tesoro, LADWP, Microsoft, and Northrop Grumman for also sponsoring scholarships.  We thank our Keynote Speaker Daniel Armstrong, Founder of Find a Tree, for leaving our recipients as well as our audience feeling inspired and focused on dreaming big!  We would also like to thank OUTFRONT media for providing complimentary billboards to display our 2017 recipients within their community.

We appreciate Congresswomen Karen Bass, Senator Holly Mitchell , Senator Steven Bradford, Assembly Member Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, Assembly Member Autumn Burke and Assemblyman Mike Gipson for providing certificates to our recipients.

Congratulations once again to our 2017 scholarship award recipients!  The event was well attended and a great success!

GLAAACC Education Fund Celebrity Waiter and Waitress Luncheon

GLAAAC Education Fund and Foundation hosted their first annual Celebrity Waiter and Waitress Luncheon at the California Science Center. The objective of the luncheon is to create a unique and innovative lunchtime auction comprised with key business and community leaders. Guests are invited to sit at their table and are waited on by their Celebrity Waiter host. The waiter encourages their table guests to bid on auction items and “tip” their waiter throughout this fun-filled, themed event. All proceeds are raised for the organizations’ scholarship recipients.
