Financials Literacy and College Preparatory

GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation hosts a college-prep course that provides youth from disadvantaged backgrounds with the academic support, financial education, and leadership training to become college graduates. This course is unique in that it leverages board members from companies such as Southern California Edison, SoCalGas, Bank of America, LADWP and others, to help students who have demonstrated strong academic potential and a commitment to success, but who have knowledge or opportunity gaps in reaching their potential.

Financial Literacy is a core component of our curriculum. The course teaches students to search and assess college and career opportunities, identify and prioritize personal money management goals, develop personal spending and savings plans, comprehend the impact of time on the value of money, understand the cost of using credit, and protect their assets.

Our college prep program prepares students for the 21st century by fostering skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. We also emphasize proficiency with technology, as its effective use is a requisite skill in higher education and the workplace. The course has a strong mentoring component that focuses not only on the mechanics of completing scholarship applications, but also goal setting, exploring careers, and succeeding once enrolled in college. Through engagement in our program students develop the skills, habits, attitudes, and expertise they need to become accomplished adults.

Mentorship

The GLAAACC Ed Fund Mentorship program provides a unique role for board members and community partners to work with Ed Fund students, offering a solid support system and serving as reliable, trusted adults in the student’s life. Many of our youth have not had a solid foundation or positive role model. Our goal is to develop long-lasting relationships between mentors and mentees. Individual goals are created to empower youth and master life skills that enhance their future success in college and job readiness. Through one-on-one mentorship, we help students build self-esteem, self-worth, self-sufficiency, and long-term success.

Scholarship Reception

For more than two decades, the GLAAACC Education Fund and Foundation has helped students achieve the dream of college. This program reflects the vision of GLAAACC Chairman Gene Hale and his generosity and leadership in Los Angeles. As our Foundation looks ahead to its next century, we celebrate the important continuity this program brings to our community and culture, as well as our shared values of leadership, responsibility, and service.

Our Foundation has awarded over $1 Million in scholarships to students from at-risk communities who are graduating with the skills, passion, and leadership experiences to help their home communities. With decades of GLAAACC Ed Fund scholars back in their home communities, it is fair to say their influence is helping Los Angeles thrive.

One of our Foundation’s signature events is our Annual Scholarship Awards Reception, which now awards $5,000 scholarships to deserving inner-city high school seniors from Crenshaw, George Washington Preparatory, Hamilton, Jordan, and Susan Miller Dorsey high schools. Our Foundation has had the honor of featuring prominent keynote speakers such as basketball legend & six-time NBA MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John E. Deasy.
