The GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation proudly acknowledges the accomplishments of its recipients.  It gives the Foundation great pleasure to see graduating high school seniors from inner-city public schools succeed in life.

Carla Beverly Banks received her scholarship at the 9th Annual GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation Scholarship Luncheon in June of 2008.  She graduated from George Washington Preparatory High School and is now attending the University of California at Berkeley.  This summer, Carla traveled to Trinidad and Tobago for a Filmmaking Study abroad Program. She did a documentary on the lack of recycling in Trinidad, which is an important issue. She also immersed in culture: going snorkeling, visiting temples, and even attending a Hindu wedding.

Matthew Love, a 2007 GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation scholarship recipient, graduated from Susan Miller Dorsey High School and is now attending University of California at Los Angeles.  Mr. Love recently informed the GLAAACC Education Fund & Foundation of an internship he completed at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.  Below, Mr. Love summarizes his experience:

I worked in the Customer Information and Analytics department of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. where I held the position of an analyst. I basically lived in excel and power point. I had to do some comparative analysis for Honda’s Acura luxury sedan line-up of vehicles and I also spear headed a project regarding customer survey data. More than anything I feel I have a better understanding of the intangible factors that contribute to corporate success. I gained a better grasp of working in excel and sharpened my speaking and presentation skills. Also, I gained a better understanding of the automotive industry and how it functions.

One last experience that was memorable for me was when I went to J.D. Power and Associates Corporate HQ. J.D. Power is one of the premiere customer satisfaction tracking firms in the world. I worked with my supervisors on projects that were still pending after my 10 week period with the company. I greatly enjoyed my experience with the company and would advise other young adults to seek internship experience wherever they can. I had never even considered working in the automotive industry, at least not until now. One should never limit themselves but better yet keep their options open.
